My first big trip abroad was back in 1997 when myself and my friend Julie set off on a 30 hour flight from London to Australia. We spent our first few weeks in Sydney, staying with friends and working to save enough so we could explore the vast country a little more. Getting a job was easy - as a UK citizen I had a 'Working Holiday Visa' so it was easy to pick up work in a restaurant or bar. Many people I met were staying in Sydney longer so some had more 'serious' jobs than me!!

After a few weeks Julie and I set off with our Greyhound pass for a trip around Australia. First stop was Canberra, then down to Melbourne, a trip along the Great Ocean Road, then up through the Grampian Mountains to Adelaide. Then it was north to Ayres Rock (Uluru) - via Coober Pedy, an old opal mining town where everyone lives underground! Throughout our trip we stayed in hostels and met many other travellers, all with interesting and exciting tales to tell.
